CBN -to sleep, perchance to dream

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

CBN gets created with neglect and exposure

People are asking about product high in CBN. That's right, CBN, Cannabinol, is yet another by-product of the Cannabis plant. Store managers report that their customers are interested in this cannabinoid reputed to help with sleep.

Although you won't be able to purchase a plant high in CBN, you may find it in a long forgotten stash hidden in the back of a drawer.

Consider CBN as an older, and wiser part of the plant. That's because if you leave some of your Cannabis plant material sitting out in the open air, you probably have a plant with a dominant CBN cannabinoid. It's THC that has been oxidised, exposed to light.

CBNa, the compound that breaks down into CBN is produced from the aging of THCa and its exposure to UV lighting. The process comes with time and the natural breakdown of raw cannabis acids. If left for several week, THCa-rich cannabis will being to produce CBN naturally. CBManufacturers are creating CBN by exposing THC to heat and light.

So what's the big deal and the new interest in CBN?

It's not the high. CBN has a mild psychoactive response, more than CBD but less than THC.

It's all about sleep, so critical to our health and often so elusive. Sleep helps our brain work properly, our emotions balanced. Lack of it causes a myriad of health issues.

Berkeley-based steep Hill Labs found that CBN might be the most sedative of all the cannabinoids. the research lab started that a good dose of CBN is equivalent to 2.5 to 5 mg of pharmaceutical sedative diazepam, also known as Valium. The study also says that CBD and CBN work together to provide an even better sedative synergy.

With the increased interest in CBN, we anticipate that there will be future studies and less anecdotal evidence about this cannabinoid. But in the meantime, start low and slow. And sweet dreams.
